The current status of Duolingo Kannada

Duolingo's Indian-language coverage is narrower than its global catalogue suggests. The platform offers Hindi for English speakers, and English for Hindi and Tamil speakers, but no other Indian languages currently have a full course on the platform. Kannada is not among them. There is no published Duolingo roadmap that promises Kannada by a specific date.

Duolingo decides which languages to build by estimating the size of the addressable learner base — not the speaker base. Kannada has roughly 45 million native speakers but a global learner base that is much smaller and harder to reach. That combination has kept it below Duolingo's launch threshold so far.

If a Kannada course does eventually appear on Duolingo, it will likely follow the same model as the existing courses: script-led, sentence translation, gamified streaks. That model is good at vocabulary recognition. It is not particularly good at producing learners who can hold a real spoken conversation in Kannada with an auto driver in Indiranagar.
